How to Replace Your GPU Thermal Pads — Step by Step Guide
Is your GPU running hot? It might be time to replace
your thermal pads. Over time, thermal pads can dry out
and lose effectiveness, causing your GPU to overheat.
SIGNS YOUR GPU THERMAL PADS NEED REPLACING:
– GPU temperatures are unusually high
– System crashes or freezes during gaming
– Fan running at full speed constantly
– GPU performance is lower than expected
WHAT YOU NEED:
– New thermal pads (BCI Thermal Pads 12.8 W/mK recommended)
– Small Phillips head screwdriver
– Plastic pry tool or guitar pick
– Isopropyl alcohol and cotton swabs
STEP BY STEP GUIDE:
Step 1 — Safety First
Turn off your PC and unplug it from the wall.
Ground yourself to avoid static damage.
Step 2 — Remove the GPU
Remove your GPU from the PCIe slot carefully.
Step 3 — Remove the Heatsink
Unscrew the heatsink from the GPU PCB carefully.
Keep track of all screws.
Step 4 — Remove Old Thermal Pads
Peel off the old thermal pads. Use isopropyl alcohol
and a cotton swab to clean the surfaces thoroughly.
Step 5 — Apply New Thermal Pads
Cut your BCI Thermal Pads to size if needed.
Peel the protective film and apply firmly to the
memory chips and VRMs.
Step 6 — Reassemble
Reattach the heatsink, reinstall the GPU and test.
WHICH THERMAL PAD THICKNESS DO I NEED?
